William Ogle Carlisle was a topographer in the British army who was sent to serve in Canada in the 1870s. While there, he published several illustrations in Canadian Illustrated News and L'Opinion publique. Upon his return to England, he published a collection of cartoons entitled Recollections of Canada; it follows the adventures of a young man named Downylip during his first visit to Canada.
