Hugh Donnelly was born in New Zealand. He emigrated to Canada in the late 1960s, and relocated to Prince Edward Island in the early 1970s. For a time, he was owner and operator of Alpeque Harbor Cottages at Cabot Park. Apart from his fiction, Donnelly was also a playwright. He wrote two 3-act plays - The Sacred Flame (1947), and So Red The Dawn (1962). Donnelly also wrote Children of Sin; or Dr. Finnestaire's Obsession (1945) under the pseudonym Allen Wainford-Ash, as well as another dramatic composition, Twelve Midnight (1945) under the same pseudonym.
