This engraving is from the work Le Antichità Romane (The Roman Antiquities) by the Italian artist and architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi. The specific plate is identified as Plate XXIII from Volume 2 of the work. The text at the below the image provides description. It indicates the image depicts a part of the great building and burial ground added to the Mausoleum of Santa Costanza in Rome. Piranesi’s Roman Antiquities was first published in 1756, and a second printing was issued in 1784. A previous dealer has written in pencil at the bottom right “Rome 1784” suggesting this copy is from the second printing. However, there are no recorded changes to Plate XXIII from the first to the second printings.
