Mathew Carey was one of the most important figures in early American map publishing. The firm became M. Carey & Sons upon being joined by Isaac Lea, in about 1821, when Isaac married Mathew's daughter Frances Ann Carey. Matthew Carey retired from the firm in about 1824 leaving the firm in the hands of his son, and Lea.
