The Prince Edward Island Film Society was launched in the 1972-1973 winter season. It was a joint undertaking between the University of Prince Edward Island and the Confederation Centre in Charlottetown. Eventually, it evolved into the Charlottetown Film Society, which was formed in 2012. The society took over operation and ownership of City Cinema in Charlottetown, in 2019.
