Louis Tremblay's father was a close friend with the Canadian painter René Richard (1895-1982), who lived and worked out of his home in Baie-Saint-Paul, Charlevoix. Richard became a mentor to the young Louis Tremblay, greatly influencing his artistic career. In 1972, when this sketch was made, Tremblay (b. 1949) was 23 years old. It serves as an homage to the relationship between the young artist and his mentor. The house depicted in the sketch is now an art gallery and museum preserving Richard's studio.
